We’re not doing particularly well at the Olympic Games, you’d have to say. Although, it should be noted, when we say “we”, we most definitely aren’t referring to the nation as a sporting totality in the Athenian context. Oh cointreau, as the bishop said to the absinthe. In fact, as a nation, “we” are doing spiffingly well at these particular Olympalladiums, all things considered. And they have been – by an eminent group of mathematical persons who beaver away at the OESeedy or the World Bonk or somesuch, producing reams of convoluted international comparisons which we’re only allowed to mention if the results make us look better than some unstable, impoverished Third World Pacific state like, say, Australia.
Because what these World Bonkers have concluded is that if you divide the number of athletes in the village then they probably won’t have a very good time.

What is a Bloke? This is the question that has occupied the greatest minds of the anthropological and sociological worlds for many years. Not in a literal sense, of course, at the base level, the definition of a Bloke is perfectly clear: a Bloke is a human male native to Australia, typically between and centimetres tall, frequently partial to beer and ventilated footwear, who has built a mighty nation from the scraps of colonialism and inappropriate farming practices. That much is obvious.
Writer and comedian Ben Pobjie examines the different types of Bloke in Australia today, giving the reader a unique and expert insight into Blokedom. What makes a Bloke tick? What do Blokes like to do? Where do they go? These questions and more are answered in this hilarious and irreverent book. Even though Howard was voted out in As an Anglo-dominated island-nation-continent located in a region dominated by non-Western countries, insularity has long been both a geographical and a political issue in Australia. It is the expression of those politics in Australia, through the reconstruction to nationalist ends of the archetype of the Average Australian Bloke, that is my primary concern in this article. I use it as a shorthand term for a political shift that has been most marked in Anglo countries but also strongly present elsewhere such as Sarkozyan France.
The third element is a re-imbrication of religion and politics, which among its many other problems is particularly damaging for women. At Federation and national independence from Britain in , Australia was the second country in the world after New Zealand to grant women the vote.

There is good news, though. This is one bloke who knows exactly what makes the sheilas tick. It is, according to this legend, all in the nail polish and nail style. Marwan, a 26 year-old dude from Huntington Beach, California, has even gone so far as to put together a six-page book to explain the risks — and possible rewards — inherent in dating chicks with certain nail styles.
